Preparing Your Site’s Drainage System Before Winter Arrives

drainage system preparation for winter

Getting your drainage system ready before winter hits is essential to protect your property from water damage, frozen pipes, and costly repairs. Clear blockages, insulate vulnerable components, and make sure water flows away from your foundation to avoid serious issues once temperatures drop.

1. Clear Gutters, Downspouts & Outdoor Drains

Clogged gutters and drains are common causes of winter water problems.

What to do:

  • Clean out all gutters and downspouts. Use gloves or a scoop to remove leaves and debris.
  • Flush gutters with a hose to ensure water flows freely.
  • Inspect downspout extensions to ensure they carry water at least five feet away from your foundation.
  • Clear all outdoor drains and grates of mulch, dirt, and obstructions.
  • Use a plumbing snake for blockages deeper in catch basins or drains.

Taking time now prevents overflow and frozen blockages later.

2. Insulate Pipes & Outdoor Water Components

Frozen pipes can burst and cause significant damage. Here are the steps to protect exposed plumbing:

  • Wrap outdoor pipes with foam insulation or heat tape.
  • Install insulated covers on all exterior faucets.
  • Seal crawl spaces, basements, and attics where cold air might enter.
  • Insulate pipes in unheated areas like garages and sheds.

If you’re unsure about a pipe, it’s safer to insulate it.

3. Winterize Irrigation Systems & Remove Hoses

Irrigation lines and hose bibs are especially vulnerable, therefore it is important to winterize all units properly. Here is how:

  • Shut off the main irrigation controller.
  • Drain the entire system or blow out the lines with compressed air in freezing regions.
  • Disconnect and store hoses.
  • Remove or insulate backflow preventers.
  • Close isolation valves halfway (about a 45-degree angle).
  • Wrap any remaining parts of the system in insulation.

4. Check Grading & Water Flow Away From Foundation

Snowmelt needs a path away from your structure.

Evaluate your site:

  • Does water run away from your house or slab?
  • Are there low spots that collect water?
  • Do you need French drains or swales installed?

Even a slight grading fix can prevent major water damage.
